A Koh Samui Boat Trip with Kids: What It’s Really Like from Age Four

The first rule of a Koh Samui boat trip with kids on our boat is the age: four is the minimum, on every trip. For a four-year-old, the Half-Day Trip means a fresh coconut on boarding, the Big Buddha to spot from the deck, a supervised splash with the crew in shallow water at Silver Beach or Coral Cove, a lunch you chose for them in advance, and shade whenever they want it. They are back at the marina by 14:00, in time for a nap.
Below is what the day is like for four-to-eleven-year-olds, from the crew of one traditional Thai teak cruiser that carries fifteen guests at most, including the families we would rather send somewhere else.
Is a boat trip safe for children on Koh Samui?
It can be, from age four, on a slow boat with lifejackets, shade and a crew watching the water. A common complaint in Samui boat reviews is the speedboat crossing: frightened children and soaked, seasick passengers. Ours is the opposite kind of vessel, a heavy wooden displacement hull that cruises at roughly 6 to 7 knots and keeps the coastline in view the whole way. It doesn't slam like a speedboat.
What that looks like on board:
- Lifejackets and snorkelling gear for every guest.
- A supervised snorkelling session for children aged 4 to 11, with the crew, in shallow water. It is crew-supervised recreational snorkelling, not formal instruction.
- Fifteen guests and three crew at most, so heads are easy to count.
- A shaded cabin and stern for the hottest part of the day, plus a marine toilet on board.
Why our minimum age is four
Four is where we drew the line, and it applies to every trip we run, private charters included. A boat has a ladder into open water, a deck that moves, a roof that people jump from and, on the Half-Day Trip, five hours between boarding and stepping off. Most four-year-olds manage that well with a parent beside them. Most two-year-olds do not, and a parent who spends the morning braced around a toddler gets nothing out of the day.
If your youngest is under four, a beach morning and a pool afternoon will serve you better than we will. For other ideas, browse things to do on Koh Samui. We will still be here in a couple of years.
A Koh Samui boat trip with kids: the Half-Day Trip for 4 to 11-year-olds
It is five hours of short bursts: a bit of cruising, a lot of getting in and out of the water, lunch, then more water. Here is how a typical Half-Day Trip runs, Monday to Friday.
- 07:00–08:15: the hotel van collects you, with the exact time depending on your area and confirmed the day before.
- 09:00: board at Petcharat Marina in Bangrak or at Hansar Samui Resort in Bophut (the crew confirm which on WhatsApp). Everyone gets a fresh coconut.
- First leg: north along the Big Buddha coast. The 12-metre golden Buddha on Koh Faan is easy to spot from the water: a good first job for the family lookout.
- Then anchor off Silver Beach (Crystal Bay) or Coral Cove next door, chosen on the day, for snorkelling, swimming, the floating beanbags and the dinghy ashore for beach time.
- Lunch on board, then more swimming or a lie-down in the shade.
- 14:00: back alongside, which leaves the afternoon free for a nap.
The size of the group is what makes this work for children. On a big day boat, a nervous eight-year-old gets one go at the ladder before it is time to move on. With fifteen people aboard, the same child can change their mind four times, and that is usually how children decide they love something.
Confident swimmers can jump off the roof into the sea at anchor. Jumping from the roof is at the crew's discretion. One family wrote: “This was a particular highlight for the children: snorkeling, swimming, and jumping into the sea from the roof of the boat.” (Holzbau Grossmann, on Google)
Lunch for fussy eaters is chosen before you board
You pick one dish per person from a menu of twelve, lettered A to L, when you book, and the order goes to the kitchen by 4pm the day before. Nothing is cooked on board. Lunch is made fresh on the day by an island kitchen, with seasonal fruit alongside, and soft drinks are included all day.
For a child who eats four things, the plain-sounding options are the useful ones: G Beef bolognese, J Clean fried rice chicken, F Grilled veggie pesto pasta or C Satay chicken wrap. Put allergies in the booking notes and the kitchen works around them.
Guests notice the difference. Thomas (on Google) wrote: “2 days before we were asked for our meal choices … they have all the lunch freshly prepared on the day”.
The Sunset Cruise is the gentler first boat trip
If you are not sure how your child will take to a boat, start with the Sunset Cruise rather than the half day. Three and a half hours is an easier promise to keep with a small child than five, and there is no snorkelling to negotiate.
| Half-Day Trip | Sunset Cruise | Private Charter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days | Monday to Friday | Monday to Friday | Weekends, or a weekday with no shared trip |
| On the water | 09:00 to 14:00 | 16:00 to about 19:30 | About 4 or 8 hours |
| In the water | Snorkelling, swimming, beanbags, roof jumps | A swim stop, no snorkelling gear | Planned with the crew |
| Food | Lunch chosen A–L in advance | Snacks and light evening bites | Chef menu planned with you |
| Child fare (4–11) | ฿1,900 | ฿1,500 | One price per boat |
The van collects you between 14:00 and 15:15. The boat heads out past Fisherman’s Village in Bophut and along Mae Nam to the open water off Bang Po, where the crew stop for a swim around 17:30.
It is not a dinner cruise, so most families eat afterwards and a table near your hotel is worth booking. And with the drive home, a four-year-old will be up past their usual bedtime, so bring a light jacket for the breeze and expect a sleepy van ride.
Private charter for villa groups and three generations
If you are a villa group, or there are grandparents who would rather watch than swim, the Private Charter is the simple answer. The whole boat is yours for up to fifteen guests at one price per boat, the same for two people or fifteen: about four hours for ฿28,000 or about eight hours for ฿49,000. Start at 09:00 or any time from 07:00 to 16:00, on a route planned with the crew for the sea on the day.
The chef menu is planned with you after booking, so tell the crew about the vegetarian grandparent and the child who eats one thing. Weekends are kept for charters, which makes a charter the only way to get out with us on a Saturday or Sunday. A weekday charter is possible only when no shared trip is booked that day, so it is never guaranteed.
Seasickness on a slow wooden hull: the honest version
Most children are fine on our boat, some are not, and no boat can promise zero motion. Under way, the heavy hull is steady and the coast is always in sight, which helps. The moment sensitive children notice is at anchor, when a swell rolls in and the boat sways gently from side to side.
- Give them a light breakfast before a 07:00 pickup. An empty stomach makes it worse.
- Sit them in the middle of the boat, in the shade, looking at the horizon rather than a screen.
- If your child gets carsick, ask a pharmacist on the island about a children’s remedy before the trip. Most need taking before you board.
What happens if the weather turns
The crew decide whether a trip runs. If they cancel for weather or safety, you choose a free reschedule or a full refund, and on days that do run they adjust the route for the sea state. The same applies if a shared departure does not reach its minimum of five guests.
From mid-October to mid-December the north-east monsoon is blowing, the east coast takes the swell first, and this is when trips are most likely to be moved; seas settle from late December. Rain tends to come in bursts with sunshine between. Digby, out with his family, wrote: “For a brief moment we were caught in a rain storm, which was very atmospheric and in our view was part of the experience. It lasted only 20 minutes and the rest of the time it was sunny.” (on Google)
Book your boat day early in your stay so there is room to move it, and keep a dry plan in your pocket. A Thai cooking class with a local family is a good rainy-day fallback for older children who like to help. Our guide to Samui’s rainy season has more on those weeks.
When not to book a boat trip with us
We are not right for every family, and it is better you hear that now.
- Toddlers and under-fours. The minimum age is four on every trip, with no exceptions.
- A tight budget. Big join-in day boats out of Samui sell for roughly 1,200–1,850 baht per person (a rough market range). For a family of four that is a real difference. Those trips are busier and louder, not bad.
- Children set on Ang Thong. We do not go there, and the park is closed to visitors every year from 1 November to 15 December anyway. Our Ang Thong comparison explains what that day involves.
- A weekend shared trip. Shared trips run Monday to Friday only.
What to pack for a family boat day on Koh Samui
Pack light: snorkelling gear, lifejackets, lunch, fruit and soft drinks are all on board. What you do need:
- Swimwear worn under clothes, and a rash vest or long-sleeved swim top for each child.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, hats, a towel each and dry clothes for the van home.
- A dry bag or waterproof pouch for phones.
- Your child’s own mask, if they already have one that fits.
- Water shoes for the beach stop.
- Any medication, including a motion-sickness remedy if you use one.
Website bookings close 24 hours before departure, and the free hotel pickup covers the whole island. If you are still unsure which trip suits your family, message the crew on WhatsApp at +66 62 417 0628 and ask. Alexander, who has been out with us three times with his family, put it this way: “From the very first moment, you feel like you're with friends on board.” (on Google)
Questions people ask us
- What is the minimum age for a boat trip with Endless Summer?
- Four, on every trip, including private charters. A boat has a ladder into open water, a moving deck and, on the Half-Day Trip, five hours between boarding and coming home. Most four-year-olds manage that with a parent beside them; toddlers usually do not. Children aged 4 to 11 pay the child fare and can join the crew-supervised snorkelling session in shallow water.
- Can we take a toddler on a Koh Samui boat trip?
- Not with us: our minimum age is four. If you do take a toddler on a boat elsewhere, choose a short, slow, shaded trip rather than a speedboat crossing, and keep them in the shade the whole time. For most families with a two-year-old, a beach morning and a pool afternoon is the better day, and the boat can wait for a later holiday.
- How much is the Half-Day Trip for children?
- ฿1,900 per child aged 4 to 11 and ฿2,900 per adult. That covers free hotel pickup anywhere on the island, the welcome coconut, lunch chosen in advance, soft drinks, snorkelling gear, the floating beanbags and the crew. The Sunset Cruise is ฿1,500 per child and ฿2,500 per adult.
- Will my child get seasick on the boat?
- Probably not, but no boat can promise it. Our Thai teak cruiser is a heavy, slow hull at about 6 to 7 knots and stays close to the coast, so it is far steadier than a speedboat. Sensitive children notice the gentle roll at anchor most. A light breakfast, a seat in the middle of the boat and a remedy taken before boarding all help.
- What if my child won’t eat Thai food?
- You choose lunch for each person from twelve dishes, lettered A to L, when you book, and most of them are not Thai. Beef bolognese, grilled veggie pesto pasta and a satay chicken wrap are all on the list. The food is made fresh by an island kitchen, not cooked on board, and allergies are handled through the booking notes.
- What are good family activities on Koh Samui besides a boat trip?
- Beach mornings on the north coast around Mae Nam and Bophut, an evening wander through Fisherman’s Village, and a Thai cooking class for a rainy day are easy wins with children. Save the boat for a settled weather day early in your stay, so there is room to reschedule if the crew have to move it.
