A marriage proposal in Koh Samui on a boat works when three things line up: the light, the privacy and a plan B for the weather. On a private charter of our handcrafted Thai teak cruiser, the whole boat is yours, with only the crew aboard, and a half day that starts in the mid-afternoon runs into golden hour.

This guide is written for proposals, but most of it applies to an anniversary, a honeymoon afternoon or a small birthday on the water. It covers when to go, how to keep it secret, what you will need to bring, what to do if the sky turns grey, and the cheaper option if it is just the two of you and you don't mind company.

Marriage proposal in Koh Samui: time the boat to the light

Aim for the hour before sunset, and plan the start time backwards from it. On Koh Samui the sun sets between roughly 17:55 and 18:45 depending on the month, earliest in November and latest in early July. Because the island is close to the equator, the time moves far less through the year than it does in Europe, but it still moves, so check the date you have in mind. Our guide to Bang Po and the north-west coast has the sunset month by month.

A half-day charter is about four hours. The suggested start is 09:00, but you can request any start from 07:00 to 16:00, and the crew confirm it with you. For the light, the useful options are these:

  • A start around 14:00 to 14:30: the last part of the four hours falls in golden hour, and in the months with the earliest sunsets the end of the trip comes close to the sun going down.
  • A later start, up to 16:00: four hours from 16:00 runs to about 20:00, well after dark. If you want to watch the sun go all the way down and come back in the dusk, ask for it when you book and let the crew tell you whether it works for the day and the sea.
  • A morning charter: the light is softer early and the day is cooler. Fine for a proposal that doesn't need a sunset, and it leaves the evening for dinner.

Remember the hotel van collects you before the start time, so a 14:00 start means leaving your room after lunch.

A proposal on a boat in Koh Samui with nobody else aboard

On a charter nobody else is on the boat except the crew: no other couples, no strangers with phones out. The crew are still aboard, because someone has to sail her, so tell them the plan and the moment you have in mind before the day.

Pick the spot for the view or for privacy. The open roof deck, with its beanbags, has the widest view of the water and the sky; the shaded teak cabin is the more private place to ask. The dinghy can put you ashore on a beach, if the crew think the conditions allow it on the day.

Where you go is planned with the crew around the sea state. Our boat's home water is Samui's north, north-east and east coasts, and she is slow, about 6 to 7 knots, so a charter stays close to the island rather than crossing to another one. For a sunset, the west-facing water along the north coast towards Bang Po is the natural choice, which is where our shared Sunset Cruise goes.

What the crew can help with, and what you bring

Plan on bringing the personal things yourself, and ask the crew about anything else. Decorations, cakes and photographers are not something we promise as part of a charter. Ask the crew, and we'll tell you honestly what's possible for your date.

  • The ring. Obviously. See the tip above.
  • Flowers, if you want them. Buy them on the island and bring them with you. Tropical heat is hard on cut flowers, so keep them in the shade until the moment.
  • A photographer, if you want one. Ask the crew before you book how that works on a charter.
  • Food. Chef menus are planned with you after booking, so this is where to mention a celebration.
  • Music. There are speakers on board. Ask the crew about playing your own song.
  • Clothes. Something you are happy to be photographed in, plus swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim afterwards. Salt water and a wet head do not make for the photo most people have in mind, so propose before the swim.

Bring a dry bag or a waterproof pouch for phones. There is phone charging on board but no Wi-Fi, so send the news when you are back ashore.

Keeping the proposal secret until the moment

Arrange everything with the crew on WhatsApp, at +66 62 417 0628, from your own phone. Your partner then sees nothing more than a boat trip.

Three places where secrets usually leak:

  • The confirmation. The charter is paid in full online, by card or PromptPay, and the confirmation arrives by e-mail straight away. Book it with your own e-mail address, not a shared one.
  • The passports. The crew need passport details for everyone aboard, your partner included. Have a photo of their passport ready rather than asking for it the week before.
  • The pickup. Free hotel pickup covers anywhere on the island, and the crew confirm on WhatsApp whether you board at Petcharat Marina in Bangrak or Hansar Samui Resort in Bophut. A boat trip on holiday needs no explaining, so keep the cover story that simple.

If the weather turns on the day

If the crew cancel for weather, sea conditions or safety, you choose a free reschedule or a full refund. On days that do go ahead, the crew adjust the route for the sea.

From mid-October to mid-December the north-east monsoon is blowing, and it is the stretch when trips are most likely to be moved. The east coast takes the swell first. The north coast is sometimes easier, but a strong north-easterly makes it rough too; the crew decide on the day. Seas settle from late December, and our guide to the best time to visit Koh Samui goes through the year month by month.

Rain on Samui often comes in bursts with sunshine between. Digby, out with his family, put it this way: “It lasted only 20 minutes and the rest of the time it was sunny.” (on Google). Even so, a sunset proposal needs a clear western sky, and no one can promise that a week ahead.

Birthdays, anniversaries and honeymoons on the boat

Most of the above works for any small celebration. For an anniversary on Koh Samui or a honeymoon boat trip, privacy matters less, and the shared Sunset Cruise below is often enough. For a birthday boat trip on Koh Samui with family or friends, a charter takes up to fifteen guests at one price per boat, children from age four, and our guide to a boat day for a villa group covers the per-person maths and the planning.

The cheaper option for two: the shared Sunset Cruise

If it is just the two of you and you don't mind other guests, the Sunset Cruise costs ฿2,500 per adult against the charter's ฿14,000 each for two people on a half day. The charter price is for the boat, so two people pay the same as fifteen.

The Sunset Cruise stops for a swim off Bang Po around 17:30, and the chef's light bites come out on deck as the light goes. It is not a dinner cruise, so book a table for afterwards. For an anniversary or a honeymoon evening it does the job well. For a proposal, the question is whether you want an audience. Some people do. If you don't, the Private Charter is the version where the only people watching are the crew.

Questions people ask us

Where can I propose on a boat in Koh Samui?
On a private charter, wherever the crew can sensibly take the boat on the day. Our Thai teak cruiser is slow and stays on Samui's north, north-east and east coasts. For a sunset, the west-facing water along the north coast towards Bang Po is the natural choice, which is where our shared Sunset Cruise goes. The crew plan a charter route around the sea state, so agree the general idea with them on WhatsApp in advance.
What time should a proposal charter start to catch the sunset?
Sunset on Samui falls between roughly 17:55 and 18:45, earliest in November and latest in early July, and golden hour is the hour or so before. A half-day charter lasts about four hours, so a start around 14:00 to 14:30 brings its last part into that light. You can request a later start, up to 16:00, which runs into the evening; the crew confirm whether it works.
Can the crew arrange flowers, a cake or a photographer for a proposal?
Don't assume any of them come with the charter; ask the crew on WhatsApp when you book and they will tell you what is possible. If you want to bring a photographer, ask the crew first. Food requests go through the chef menu, which is planned with you after booking. Flowers and the ring are yours to bring.
What happens if it rains on the day we planned to propose?
If the crew cancel for weather, sea conditions or safety, you choose a free reschedule or a full refund. Rain on Samui often comes in short bursts, but a sunset proposal needs a clear western sky, so book a date early in your stay with room to move it. From mid-October to mid-December the north-east monsoon makes moved trips more likely; seas settle from late December.
Is a private boat charter worth it for just two people?
Only if privacy is the point. The charter is one price for the boat, so two people pay the same as fifteen: ฿14,000 each for a half day. The shared Sunset Cruise is ฿2,500 per adult, Monday to Friday, 16:00 to about 19:30, with other guests aboard. For a proposal with no audience, charter. For an anniversary or honeymoon evening, the shared cruise is often enough.
